1192 – Acre in Syria surrendered to Richard in 1192 on condition that he gave its Turkish garrison safe passage. Once the city was in Christian hands 2,700 Turks were beheaded. (Gods assassins (c)2009 UK G Baddeley. P Woods).

1943 – Baath party, movement of Arab resistance was formed in Damascus by Michel Aflaq and Sala al Din Bitar. They supported the Rashid Ali pro German regime in Iraq, which set up a fascist background to the party.

1958 – Syria joined with Egypt to form the United Arab Republic. A plot in March 1958 to assassinate Nasser, to shoot down his plane, as he was to land in Damascus Syria. 1964-75 – Syria in 1964 Sabatino Moscati an archeologist at the university of Rome. Excavation of Tell Mardik in Syria. 34 miles south of Aleppo. The site of the city of Ebla. 1965 – Cuba welcomed the founding of the PLO. First contacts with Palestinian Fatah in 1965 in Algiers and Damascus.

Aug 1969 – TWA flight 840 Rome to Athens was hijacked to Damascus. It was destroyed after the hostages were freed.

29 Aug 1969 – A TWA airliner from LA was hijacked to Damascus. Two Palestinians were not brought to trial.

Early 1970s – While building a revolutionary movement in Iran. The exiled Ayatollah Khomeini supported the PLO and al Fatah brigades. He funded and trained militant groups in Syria with Syrian aid on Syrian soil. Shiite Muslims supported the groups, which were dominated by Sunnis under protection of a left wing dictatorship.

May 1970 to Jan 1971 – In May 1970 the Tapline, an oil pipeline running from Saudi Arabia to the port of Sidon in Lebanon, was damaged in Syrian territory. Syria refused to allow the Tapline to be repaired. The oil did not flow for 8 months until Jan 1971. The shortage of less than half a million barrels a day to Europe was felt. 1973-75 – Cuba provided military support and personel to Syria during the Yom Kippur war.

17 Dec 1973 – A hijacked plane from Italy to Greece, flew to Damascus, where it stopped for 2 hours for fuel and food, it then flew to Kuwait.

1974 – Library and collection of written knowledge at Ebla in northern Syria, which was discovered by Italian archeologists in 1974. 1974-78 – Two Soviet arms recipients, Syria and Iraq, account for $8.6 billion or 84% of Soviet arms sent to the Middle east region.

8 July 1977 – A Kuwait airways Boeing 707 from Beirut to Kuwait was hijacked to Syria.

1980 – Syria signed a treaty of friendship and cooperation with the Russian Kremlin in late 1980. Syria could get the Soviet Union’s latest and best weapons. Syria has no oil wealth, with which to purchase Soviet arms. Syria predates Iraq as a Soviet client, recipient of military supplies from the Soviet Union.

2000 – The US imposed sanctions against North Korea’s Ch’angguang Shinyong company, for selling missile tech to Syria. (Bill Gates. China, N Korea hit with Sanctions. Washington Times 28 June 2001).

5 June 2000 – China is assisting Syria and Iran to develop advanced missiles, missile engines and guidance systems. (Ross Dunn. Beijing helping Syria with missiles. The Times UK. 5 June 2000).

Aug 2000 to Sept 2001 – The CIA said Syria continues to work towards developing and producing a solid propellent rocket motor capability. North Korea and Russia continue to provide equipment and assistance for Syria’s liquid propellant missile program. 26 July 2006 – Supreme national security council secretary Ali Larijani arrived in Damascus late on 26 July 2006. Nehr news agency and Reuters reported. He is there to discuss regional developments with Syrian officials. Larijani is also to meet with Hezbollah secretary general Sheikh Hassan Nasrallah. Reports on 27 July 2006 said.

5 Aug 2006 – Ali Akbar Mohatashemi, former Iranian ambassador to Syria and the founder of Hezbollah, Mohtashemi was one of Ayatollah Khomeni’s students.

27 Nov 2006 – Two French men were expelled from Syria, they were under investigation for suspected terrorist links.

10 Sept 2007 – The Iraqi foreign ministry said that starting on 10 Sept 2007 Syria will require visas for Iraqis coming to Syria for economic trade or education. AP reported.
